Huyen Khong Son Thuong Pagoda A Hidden Gem in Hue

Hidden in the forested hills west of Hue, Huyen Khong Son Thuong Pagoda offers a quieter side of the former imperial capital. Surrounded by trees, small lakes, traditional wooden buildings and meditation spaces, the pagoda feels very different from Hue’s better-known heritage landmarks.

Before visiting, however, there is one important detail to know: Hue has two pagodas commonly known as Huyen Khong. Huyen Khong Son Trung, or Huyen Khong 1, is located in Nham Bieu, while this guide focuses on Huyen Khong Son Thuong, also known as Huyen Khong 2, in the Hon Vuon mountain area.

For travelers looking beyond the Imperial City and the usual sightseeing route, Huyen Khong Son Thuong is a chance to experience Hue through Buddhism, nature, traditional architecture and silence.

Huyen Khong Pagoda in Hue: Why Are There Two?

There are two Huyen Khong pagodas in Hue: Huyen Khong Son Trung (Huyen Khong 1) and Huyen Khong Son Thuong (Huyen Khong 2).

The history of Huyen Khong began in 1973 in Lang Co, where Venerable Vien Minh and several disciples established the original pagoda. In 1978, the pagoda was relocated to Nham Bieu – Luu Bao, west of Hue, under the guidance of Venerable Gioi Duc. This site is now known as Huyen Khong Son Trung, or Huyen Khong 1.

In 1989, Venerable Gioi Duc established Huyen Khong Son Thuong in the Hon Vuon mountain area, creating the forested meditation retreat now commonly known as Huyen Khong 2.

This guide focuses on Huyen Khong Son Thuong (Huyen Khong 2).

Where Is Huyen Khong Son Thuong Pagoda?

Huyen Khong Son Thuong Pagoda is located in Cham Hamlet, Kim Long Ward, Hue City, Vietnam, in the Hon Vuon mountain area west of central Hue. The pagoda is about 14–15 km from Hue city center and sits at an elevation of roughly 300 meters above sea level.

Unlike the more central temples of Hue, Huyen Khong Son Thuong is surrounded by forested hills, ponds and quiet rural landscapes. Its secluded location is an important part of the experience, giving visitors a chance to explore a peaceful Theravada Buddhist retreat away from the city’s main tourist areas.

Things to see at Huyen Khong Son Thuong

Huyen Khong Son Thuong is not a large monumental complex. Instead, its appeal comes from the combination of Buddhist architecture, forest scenery, ponds and meditation spaces.

The Main Hall

The Main Hall is the central religious space of the pagoda, surrounded by trees and gardens.

Visitors are welcome to appreciate the architecture and atmosphere, but should remember that this is an active Buddhist site. Keep your voice low and dress respectfully when entering religious areas.

Thuy Nguyet Dam

Thuy Nguyet Dam is one of the most distinctive features of Huyen Khong Son Thuong.

The  pond, trees and surrounding architecture create a quiet setting that reflects the pagoda’s connection with meditation and nature. It is also a popular place to pause and take in the scenery.

Am May Tia

Am May Tia is a smaller meditation space within the complex.

Together with the surrounding gardens and forest, it helps create the secluded atmosphere that distinguishes Huyen Khong Son Thuong from larger urban temples.

The Five Lakes and Forest Gardens

The ponds and forest gardens are among the most enjoyable parts of a visit.

Rather than moving quickly between major monuments, visitors can walk slowly through the grounds, explore the shaded paths and observe the relationship between the architecture and natural landscape.

How to Get to Huyen Khong Son Thuong Pagoda?

Huyen Khong Son Thuong is about 14–15 km west of Hue city center, and the journey usually takes around 30–45 minutes, depending on your starting point, traffic and weather.

From central Hue, follow Kim Long Street westward, then continue past Thien Mu Pagoda and along the road through Van Thanh and Vo Thanh. Cross Xuoc Du Bridge and continue for about 1 km toward Dong Cham Village.

Once you reach Dong Cham, look for the signs pointing to Huyen Khong Son Thuong Pagoda. Turn onto the smaller road and follow the signs for roughly 3 km through the hills and forest until you reach the pagoda.

The final section is narrower and more winding than the roads in central Hue, so take extra care when traveling by motorbike, especially after rain.

Transportation options:

  • Motorbike: A flexible choice for independent travelers who want to control their own schedule and enjoy the scenery along the way.
  • Private car: A comfortable option for couples, families or groups, especially if you plan to combine the pagoda with several nearby attractions.
  • Taxi: Suitable for travelers who prefer not to drive, although arranging a return journey in advance can be useful because the pagoda is in a quieter area.
  • Hue tour: A guided or private itinerary can be convenient if you want to combine Huyen Khong Son Thuong with other cultural and natural attractions without arranging each transfer yourself.
