After 14 years of searching, Cam Ke Mountain was chosen for its harmonious blend of mountains, water, and greenery. Minh Mang renamed the site Hiếu Sơn and referred to his tomb as Hiếu Lăng. Construction began in April 1840, but the emperor passed away during the building process. His successor, Emperor Thieu Tri, completed the tomb in 1843.

The tomb spans approximately 18 hectares, with 40 structures symmetrically arranged along three parallel axes, centered around the Divine Path (Đường Thần Đạo). The tomb’s layout resembles a person lying in repose, with the head resting on Kim Phụng Mountain, feet extended towards the river junction, and arms symbolized by the two halves of Trừng Minh Lake.
